Spiritual goals are simply the steps we purposely take to draw closer to our God. As Christians, our plans must involve walking like Jesus daily to achieve the ultimate goal of developing a close relationship with God.

What does the Bible say about spiritual goals? It’s quite simple, my dear, but so hard to do. Jesus was asked by a scribe, “What is the greatest commandment?” Jesus answered in Mark 12:30, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” And, how do we love the Lord? We get our answer in Matthew 6:33, by seeking first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, then everything else will fall into place. In other words, we must die to self and in order to do this, we must read, know, and understand the Living Word. Gaining wisdom by reading the Holy Bible must be an aim or goal of spirituality.

6. Perform service work to help others in need

How Do you Trust God in a Difficult Situation?

Are you in a stressful situation and not sure what to do? First, the best action is to pray. Ask for wisdom and trust that He will make the right decision. I suggest recording your prayers in a journal to see how He answers them!

The possibilities could be a door opening or opportunity, a wise friend giving advice, or God granting you patience in waiting. That’s it! The hard part is trusting in the Lord’s timing. While He may reveal His answer right away, many times, He uses this special time to build the fruit of the spirit: patience.

There’s nothing God can’t take care of – just make sure you are applying Biblical principles. In His word, He tells us to trust in Him and you will have perfect peace. Just keep your mind focused on Him (Isaiah 26:3-4, John 14:1).

What Happens When We Trust God while Suffering?

From my own experience and testimony, the power of trusting God works! We must say ‘no’ to doubt and fear and ‘yes’ to trusting in God! If we do have faith in Him, we can expect many blessings through the trials we face. I’m not necessarily talking about material possessions, but spiritual blessings. Always choose the Biblical way as He blesses us with confidence, clarity, and peace.

When we bought our health sharing option with Medi-Share, it was over 12 years ago. Since the inception of our enrollment, our family has had great health and very few issues when the kids were young and even early in high school. The only exception was when my daughter was 12 years old when diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Trusting God with our Healthcare

My Trusting God story started way back in 2005. When my kids were little, as I mentioned earlier, I quit my lucrative job in Health IT to become a stay-at-home mom with 2 kids under 2 years old. We were advised by everyone close to us not to do it as I was the breadwinner. Our finances would supposedly be too tight with only one income, especially since my husband was ramping up a new construction business.  

However, we know the Bible said that God will provide when we follow our God-given roles as men and women, husbands and wives, and fathers and mothers.  It was simple — we were obeying the Lord.

Trusting God with our Finances

As we progressed on one income, our small budget needed some reductions in monthly costs due to the real estate market volatility my husband had entered. With the rising costs of health insurance, groceries, and education as a new homeschool family, we decided to believe in the Bible instead of looking to others for guidance or the government for help.

Instead, it was time to take a leap of faith and reduce our costs using Biblical principles.

One of the best biblical decisions we made was canceling our health insurance policy. Our past healthcare company supported unbiblical medical procedures that were against our beliefs so instead, we decided to contribute monthly to a health-sharing program called Medi-Share. Since our family was young and healthy, we chose a higher annual household portion (AHP) with a lower monthly cost.

Trusting God with Our Health

For many years, Medi-Share was always there for us. We didn’t need to go to the doctor much during the younger years, but when we did, Medi-Share would help pay for doctor visits and labs.

However, just a couple of years ago, I faced a huge health challenge when the kids were in high school. It was very unexpected and shocking. One morning in September, I discovered a lump in my left breast. I didn’t panic but kept it in the back of my mind as I was feeling pretty well with no symptoms or soreness.

However, after two months I noticed it seemed to be growing. I decided it was time to seek a specialist. I had a quick succession of appointments with my physician assistant, an ultrasound and finally, a mammogram.

It was official, I had breast cancer. How would I cope?

My husband and I decided to trust in the Lord to care for EVERYTHING, and HE DID! After two surgeries and almost two years have gone by, ALL OF MY BILLS HAVE BEEN PAID and I feel better than ever! I changed my diet, and switched from a work-focused routine into a spiritually-focused schedule. This allowed me to transform my mind into Biblical Thinking that changed my relationships into deeper connections with my husband, kids, family, and friends.

I can confidently say my God supplied all my needs! God came through for me and my family and Medi-Share was a vehicle God used to take care of my bills. There is no special secret — the only way is to Trust in the Lord During Difficult Times!

What Happens When We Trust God in the Midst of Suffering?

When we choose to stop relying on our understanding and instead, lean on God, something wonderful happens. Our burdens are lifted. Peace fills our hearts. God works in us. While we don’t always know why bad things happen to us, that’s not for us to know. God’s promises say that He will direct our paths as written in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Remember, my friend, you are not alone in your struggles. Cast all your cares upon him, for He cares for you. God promises to be with you through the toughest of times, the most painful procedures, and the most devastating relationships. His presence is a constant source of comfort and support.

What does the Bible Say about Keeping Faith in Hard times?

When we as humans remove our worries, doubts, and fears and have faith in God, something miraculous happens. The fruits of the spirit are activated. Joy, peace, and love are abounding. God is ever-present in our mind. Those negative thoughts transform into biblical thoughts when we focus on trusting God through Bible verses.

God has a plan for you as shown in Jeremiah 29:11. He will get you through these hard times, just have faith in Him. God encourages you to cast all your burdens on Him because He cares deeply for you (1 Peter 5:7, Psalm 55:22). He will sustain you and never allow you to be shaken.

Trusting God in All Circumstances

As we get into the scriptures my friend, let’s wrap up with positive thoughts knowing that you must trust in God during every single circumstance that comes your way.

For your physical needs, start eating healthy meals that include God’s foods, such as an abundance of organic fruits and vegetables. To strengthen your mental capacity, stop watching and listening to bad shows (including the news) or music that corrupt the mind and instead, saturate yourself with the word of God.

Begin the habit of consistently reading the Bible, listening to sermons, as well as playing Godly music. Your strong mental health will transform your spirit into drawing closer to the Lord. He’ll give you the confidence to make wise decisions daily that will lead you and your family to a brighter future.

Why Reading the Bible Daily is Essential

There are several reasons why reading the bible daily is key to a successful life. Here’s a nice short list to help you decide if it’s also important for you too. Seriously, I could go on and on for a very long time but I think these key points will convince you.

• Reading the bible will ensure you understand God and help you put on your shield of faith. If we don’t read the Bible daily, our faith will weaken. If our faith weakens, we will not be a good teacher or example to our kids, neighbors, spouses etc.
• Studying the Bible will help you witness to others, the main goal for us as Christians, according to Jesus. Our purpose in life as Christians is to spread the gospel as it states in Matthew. Have you heard of the Romans Road to Salvation? It’s a great way to spread the gospel, especially for new Christians or those who haven’t started spreading the gospel yet.
• As the Bible states, the Truth will set you free. As human beings, we are always looking on how to be free. Where do you get the Truth? The Holy Bible is the only Truth and inerrant word of God.
• The Holy Bible teaches us the truth, including what God expects from us. We also learn how to worship Him, how to make important decisions, how to deal with struggles, etc. It’s the Ultimate and Most Comprehensive Guide for Life Handbook or as I call it, “How to Be Happy” Handbook!
• Most importantly, developing a personal, intimate, relationship with God is how we have spiritual success. The closer we get to God, the more Christ-like we become.

Hopefully, I’ve convinced you that reading the Bible is more important than feeding our faces. The Bible is the Bread of our spiritual hunger. It’s the water that quenches our thirst. Jesus is the True Living Water!

How to Start Reading the Bible Daily

Now, that we’ve established the WHY we must read the bible, let’s examine and dissect the HOW we dive deep into the scriptures. A major element to beginning our daily walk with the Lord is establishing a consistent routine. It’s an essential plan for a long term bible study.

Here are some quick tips on how to start reading the bible daily:

• Find a quiet place with limited distractions to study the scriptures
• Establish the same time daily to encourage frequency in your schedule.
• Determine a trigger that reminds you each day to read your bible. (ie brushing your teeth, grabbing a cup of coffee etc)
• Keep your bible and bible tools next to your quiet place

These bible study tips will ensure that your routine is consistent and long-lasting. My “prayer room” is in front of the fireplace and I go there before starting the day to read my bible, take notes in my spiritual journal, and pray to the Lord.

How Do I Read the Bible and Understand it?

Wondering how to read the Bible for the first time? As a beginner, to read the bible and understand it, many would suggest a commentary while reading your assigned passages. I have used a Bible Commentary by David Sorenson for years to help me understand more difficult bible scriptures. If David Sorenson’s commentary is not in the budget, you might want to try getting a KJV Study Bible or consider the following Bible Resources for deep bible understanding.

I know what you are thinking — the King James Version (KJV) is the hardest version to understand as it was translated in English over 400 years ago. However, the KJV is an accurate translation. The more contemporary versions have missing verses and were translated based on interpreted context, not word for word like the King James Version. That’s why I recommend getting a thorough, detailed commentary to help you understand the best Bible version — the KJV. This is my opinion and if you want to use another version, that is certainly up to you. I’m just telling you from my research years ago and what opinion is, I want to be totally transparent.

Bible Tools for Reading the Bible

Here is a great list of biblical tools that will help you on your spiritual journey. While some may be hard on the budget, our money should be wisely spent on the things of God. Yet, if you cannot afford most of these incredible bible resources, consider at least a good study Bible in the KJV version.

Is it Better to Read the Bible in Chronological Order?

While you certainly can read the bible in chronological order, if you are more of a beginner or new at reading the bible, I would take a different approach. I follow a different path that Pastor Dr. Terry Coomer suggested in his booklet titled How to Have Daily Time with God. Start with the New Testament and the books of Psalms and Proverbs. Then, alternate between the New Testament and Old Testament, respectively.

What does that look like? Here is a list below of the sequential order of bible books. Daily, read 2 to 3 chapters a day. When you start a new book, don’t skip the introduction of the bible book, instead, read the introduction thoroughly. It will help you understand the author’s intent and the history of the period.

Where to Start Reading the Bible

Here is where to start reading the Bible, and it’s not chronologically, even though I’ve read the Bible in sequential order when I was a new Christian. I would suggest starting with the First book of John. 1 John reveals to us how to have fellowship with God. We must build a relationship with God. As you begin your first month, you want to read the 5 chapters of 1 John over and over again for 30 days. Then, after you are finished, follow this order.

How to Start Reading the Bible

Here are 5 easy steps on how to start reading the Bible. As mentioned above, once you begin each new book of the Holy Bible, study the introduction. It will help you identify where the author is coming from and his audience. Reread each bible book at least twice through before moving onto the next book. On a daily basis, read at least 2 to 3 chapters at a time. Write in your spiritual journal as the Lord speaks to you through his bible verses.

Keep in mind that reading the book of Proverbs will give you a lot of wisdom you’ll need during uncertain times throughout your life. A suggestion would be to begin with one Proverbs chapter a day before you begin. For example, if it’s March 1st, read Chapter 1 of Proverbs.

Remember, as you read each verse carefully, have a spiritual journal and a pen beside you and write copious notes. Write a general outline and note the topics of each chapter like “The Wedding at Cana” or “Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray”. You’ll be thankful to have these notes when referring back to them in the years ahead. Plus, write down any struggles you are facing as you’ll also appreciate these in the future when you realize God had a plan for these crises and issues we go through.

How do I Start Reading the Bible Daily?

Now that we’ve established how to start reading the bible, let’s dissect the question, how do I start reading the bible daily? What does it look like each day as I sit down to read? Here are some quick tips to get started:

1. Go to your prayer room or study area at the same time each day.
2. Pull out your bible, spiritual notebook or journal, and pen. Always keep it in close proximity to your study area to avoid wasting time trying to find it. I have a separate bible for separate occasions. I have a study Bible for daily devotions and a Bible for church. You can keep your Church Bible in the car so you don’t forget it.
3. Begin with reading a chapter in Proverbs based on the day of the month. Then, begin with the book of John following the bible study guidelines above.
4. As you read each chapter carefully, take notes on your discoveries, and review any commentaries to study in more detail and help you understand the text. Write a title for each chapter, seeking the main subject(s).
   
   For example, in your Bible notebook or journal, it may look like this:
   
   Gospel of John
   Ch. 1 Jesus Christ, the Word of God
   Jesus was the eternal Word of God 1 – 9
   Jesus came into the world 10 – 18
   John witness that Christ is to come 19 – 28
   John says that Jesus in the Lamb of God 29 – 37
   Jesus calls his first disciples 38 – 51
   
5. Reread each chapter carefully and note any additional messages, verse by verse. Another example is using John 3:16. Write in your notes “The greatest verse in the Bible” along with
   dissecting each word “God” – the greatest God, “so loved” the greatest devotion and love, etc.

Podcast Ladies Bible Studies and Video Resources

In addition to reading and writing God’s Word, use even more of your senses with audio and video bible resources. If you are saturating yourself with sermons, studies, and bible verses on a daily basis, you will transform your life into more of a Christ like character.

I highly recommend listening to Bible Study Podcasts. You can listen to Podcasts while cleaning, driving, walking, or running. It’s a great way to keep the negative thoughts out of your mind, and instead, fill your mind with the Word of God! My favorite Ladies Bible Study Podcast is Caldwell Commentaries. Katherine Caldwell, author of “The Caldwell Commentary” series (now at 24 books), is an absolutely amazing teacher, writer, and founder of The Living Word Ministries for over 35 years. One of the reasons I moved from the North to the South is to attend her Ladies Bible Study. I couldn’t believe how much information and knowledge I was missing in my personal Bible studies. Her commentaries have been used by multitudes of pastors, Sunday School teachers, Bible study teachers, individuals, and prison ministries.

You will find Katherine’s Caldwell Commentaries podcast via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, OverCast, iHeart, and many more. Please also go check her out at her website Caldwell Commentaries as she has many Biblical Resources, plus, you can go directly to the podcast from there as well.

I absolutely love technology, I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to digitalized information, and one of my favorite bible tools is a Kindle White. Earlier, I mentioned David Sorenson’s Commentaries, he’s one of my favorite Bible Commentary resources! I have learned a TON from him, he’s an incredible writer and expositor. Well, guess how I read them?!!! I read these digital file commentaries on my Kindle White! I’ve also read in my Kindle App on my iPad as well.

If you have one and not sure how to get digital files on your Kindle that are not Kindle type books, let me share with you my secret. I don’t think many people know this so pay attention if you love reading. If you have any PDF file, you can get it on your Kindle! A PDF file is a format created by Adobe Reader and many digital files are created using this format. It also works on an iPad! All you need is to do is download the Kindle App onto your iPad.

How to add a PDF file on your Kindle for Reading

It’s really easy to send a PDF or digital file to your Kindle. Here are simple instructions:

1. Go to the device (preferably a computer) and find the PDF file. If you don’t know where it is, do a quick search on the left hand bottom corner if you have a Windows computer.
2. Then, go find your Kindle’s email address. There are 2 ways to find your Kindle’s email, on your device or online. On your device, go to your account on your Kindle White by turning on your Kindle, click on Settings, All Settings, and then Your Account. Scroll to the bottom and you’ll see “SEnd to Kindle Email” area. Write down the email address of your Kindle, and then send the PDF file to that address. It’s that easy!
3. As an alternative, you can also go to https://amazon.com/myk/, sign into your account, go to Devices under Manage Your Content and Devices, Click on the appropriate Device, and you’ll find your Kindle’s email address.
4. Refresh your device, if you can’t find the refresh button (it’s a circular arrow), turn on and off your device, sign into your WIFI if needed, and viola, it should show up in your Kindle Library!

What is Negative Thinking? 

The definition of Negative Thinking is simply this — thoughts that come to our mind that focus on potential problems, limitations, or unfavorable outcomes INSTEAD of positive pathways and solutions. In other words, negative thoughts are entertaining or interpreting situations in a pessimistic or defeatist way. 

What Causes Negative Thoughts?

There are many reasons why anxious thoughts enter our mind. Here are some practical strategies that are, in my own experience and research, have been shown to cause bad thoughts throughout the day.

1. Past experiences: Negative events or traumas from the past that can cause panic attacks and can distort one’s perspective and lead to similar negative outcomes in the future.
2. Self-loathing: Individuals who have told you lies about your appearance or character, causing ‘low self-esteem’ by believing what others have said about you. 
3. Unfulfilled expectations: Making assumptions or having expectations about yourself or others that are not fulfilled in the time you expected. This leads to constant feelings of disappointment and failure, fueling negative thoughts.
4. Difficult Circumstances: Life can throw us into difficult circumstances, such as financial problems, health issues, or relationship conflicts, it can contribute to a negative outlook on life instead of seeing them as ‘challenges’.
5. Cognitive biases: Cognitive biases, such as the tendency to focus on negative information or to catastrophize, can distort perception and lead to negative thinking patterns.
6. Environmental influences: Constantly surrounding yourself with negative people or being exposed to overly hyped social media, negative news and media can reinforce pessimistic thoughts.

Examples of Negative Thoughts

Here are some negative thought statements that reflect pessimism, self-doubt, or a generally negative outlook on oneself or the world. 

1. “I’ll never be good enough.”
2. “Nothing ever goes right for me.”
3. “I always mess things up.”
4. “I’m such a failure.”
5. “I’ll never achieve my goals.”
6. “Nobody cares about me.”
7. “I’m so stupid.”
8. “I’ll never get out of this situation.”
9. “I’ll probably just fail again.”
10. “I don’t deserve to be happy.”
11. “I’m worthless.”
12. “I’ll never be able to change.”
13. “Things will never improve.”
14. “I’ll never be as successful as others.”
15. “I’m just destined to be miserable.”
16. “I’ll probably embarrass myself.”
17. “I’m always overlooked.”
18. “Nobody appreciates me.”
19. “I’m just a burden to others.”
20. “I’ll never find love.”

These inner voices can have a detrimental effect on everyday life and overall well-being. Not only will you struggle physically with an increasing heart rate and chemical imbalances, but you’ll have a tough time building positive experiences. 

What are the Consequences of Negative Thinking? 

These negative thought patterns always stir up bad emotions such as fear, anxiety, worry, or hopelessness. Negative self-talk will ultimately lead to lies, hinder problem-solving abilities, and impact your overall well-being. This includes a negative impact on your physical, mental, and spiritual life. Yes, it’s not a good physical trait. Many cognitive doctors have even suggested that these stressful emotions can kill you! That’s why it’s so important to address negative thinking patterns now instead of later. And, the first step is practicing positive routines and habits in our daily life through cognitive and positive mind patterns that will promote and encourage more optimistic perspectives and behaviors.  

While many seek professional help, this can cause cognitive distortions if you choose the wrong counselor. In my opinion, God is the ultimate counselor! Do you struggle with negative feelings? If so, does this sound like a good thing for you, ladies? No, absolutely not. We have to say ‘stop’ to these unwanted thoughts and say ‘yes’ to a mental shift that’s more positive. But, what is positive thinking? It’s just not about positive people or positive affirmations, it’s so much more than that. 

 Is Positive Thinking the Cure? 

The scriptures talk about this hot topic many times but the cure is not positive thinking. Positive thinking is not Biblical thinking. We can be positive that we’re going to die and go to heaven, yet, if we don’t accept Christ, positive thinking will not get us to heaven. We need to start building Biblical thoughts that match God’s Words and teachings. Let’s start with one Bible Verse that is dubbed the ‘Mental Health’ paragraph. God tells us in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”. In other words, think on things that are the truth, honest, just, pure, lovely, good report. If there is any moral goodness or praise, think about these things! 

 In the book of Matthew, he addresses this very same subject by saying, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”  Matthew 6:34 KJV  In other words, don’t worry about tomorrow, it will take care of itself. If you are worrying, you are sinning against God, it’s that simple. He’s telling us this because He wants us to trust in Him, He will take care of these burdens we tend to pile on to ourselves. 

How to Remove Negative Thoughts from Our Mind Permanently 

Let’s look at the Bible and find out how we can make a conscious effort and transform negative thoughts into positive thoughts that are true and encouraging. We are not denying that bad things and tough times happen to us, but we are stating that it’s our positive attitude that get’s us through by filling our mind with the truth. Where is the truth? The Bible holds all truth and is the living, breathing word. Let’s take some deep breaths and then dig into how we can squash these intrusive thoughts forever. 

Warning Signs You Have Negative Thoughts

Here are some real-life prompts, statements, or signs you are struggling with negative, non-Biblical thinking in your mind:

1. What if this happens….
2. Why is this happening to me?
3. If only ___ did this….
4. I hate this….
5. I’m tired of….
6. Why can’t ___ do this…
7. I’m overwhelmed with ….
8. How come ____ doesn’t happen to _____ 
9. Why can’t this happen ______

3 Steps to Begin Removing Negative Thoughts

Ready to take action? You don’t need cognitive behavioral therapy, you need a great way to transform worst-case-scenario thinking into a Biblical mindset. The best way to start getting rid of these pesky ponders is to take these simple steps to a healthy Biblical recovery: 

1. The first step is to understand that you must transform negative, unhealthy thoughts into positive, healthy Biblical thoughts. 
2. Review your daily schedule and add routines in small steps that encourage Bible reading and other habits that keep your mind and physical health fresh and clean such as regular exercise and 7-8 hours of sleep. 
3. Next, find Bible verses that are relative to your difficult trial, test, or situation. See at the end below for great Bible Verses on Biblical, mental health. Write them on paper or an index card to memorize and meditate on.
4. Let’s look at real-life examples or scenarios and transform them into truths or solutions using scriptures or passages in the Word of God:
   • Scenario 1: A woman worrying about her husband not making enough money for food. Solution: Meditate on Phillippians 4:6-7
   • Scenario 2: A lady who is sorrowing the loss of her son to drugs. Solution: Memorize and meditate on Psalm 34:17-18 and other psalms that bring comfort. 
   • Scenario 3: A family member fears that she is going to get sick from Covid since she drove her neighbor to the hospital. Solution: Write, read and memorize Isaiah 41:10 and put it on your frig. 
   • Scenario 4: A friend is struggling with the rejected feeling of divorce due to infidelity. Solution: Ask her to read her Bible and meditate on a Bible verse that reminds of her of the truth like Isaiah 41:9.
   • Scenario 5: A good friend is lonely and looking for a spouse but is tired of waiting. Solution: Tell her that God says in the Bible that He will never leave her according to Deuteronomy 31:6.  
   • Scenario 6: A woman goes to a secular counselor and is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder along with medication. Solution: Go directly to 1 Peter 5:7, as Peter reminds us, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Tips on How to Remove Negative Thoughts

I have good news for those who battle these automatic negative thoughts. There is so much hope and potential for you! Get excited as good things are coming your way if you trust in the Lord! Working on an attitude of gratitude is just one of the many ways we can start filling our minds as we become positive, Biblical thinkers. 

Starting today, here are some effective ways or practical tips to begin the process of renewing your mind and removing negative experiences. One small step can make a profound impact on your life so take instructions seriously:

1. Wake up each day before anyone in the house to make time for yourself and the Lord.
2. Praise the Lord right away as you wake up to another day. You are blessed! 
3. Thank the Lord several times throughout the day on things you are grateful for.
4. Get into a good sleep routine to avoid sleep deprivation by going to bed early. 
5. Keeping a notepad are one of the many useful tools to write good thoughts, grocery lists, things to do etc for the next day to avoid worrying.
6. Start physical activity and exercise early every day for about 20 to 30 minutes like walking, running, or simply doing stretch exercises inside the home. 
7. Create a healthy, balanced diet so you can enjoy an optimal, energetic experience throughout the day. 

Bible Verses about Negative Thoughts

Now, Here is a list of 20 key Bible Verses that are powerful tools to help get you started on a positive thinking mindset using a Biblical perspective: 

1. Psalm 139:14 – I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
2. Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
3. Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
4. John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
5. 1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

What Does the Bible Say about Love Being Kind? 

When my kids were little and squabbling, my go-to verse was usually Ephesians 4:32. When they would fight or cry about a toy or hitting each other, I’d always say ‘Be ye kind to one other…tenderhearted, forgiving one another’.

Yet, honestly, I struggled with it myself. It’s hard to forgive those who don’t ask for it. It was much easier when others asked for forgiveness, but I found most human beings do not say they’re sorry or ‘apologize’.  Instead, they ignore their offenses. I think a lot of times people don’t address this part of the human condition. 

Jesus did say we must continuously forgive those who do offend us. Why is it so hard?

Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Bible Verses about Treating Someone Badly

We do have a choice – we can respond negatively, hold love or a relationship with them, and not forgive. Yet, that’s the worldly way. We are not supposed to be like the world. In Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

So, going back to the choice we have in front of us. We can obey God and forgive people that cause harm, or we can satisfy the flesh and sin against Him. Before we make that decision to let us control ourselves, we can think about this statement – Jesus forgave us too when we didn’t ask for forgiveness. 

God’s Love is Patient and Kind

If we can recognize and fully appreciate God’s love for us, maybe it will help us to be more Christ-like. If our Lord can die for us, why can’t we forgive one another as he does?   

It’s the flesh, my friend. We’re stubborn, bullheaded, and don’t want to cross that line. We convince ourselves that they don’t deserve it. Yet, do we deserve forgiveness from Christ? I know I don’t, yet, He still did anyway.

What Does the Bible Say about Kindness to Others?

So, why is it SO HARD to extend kindness to others as Christ did? Well, we have to be in a certain condition, we can only be kind when we’re in the Spirit. 

In other words, get right with God, be close to Jesus, and you will be kind with gentleness and goodness. 

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer. Isaiah 54:8

What Happens When We Are Not Kind

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:15 that if we don’t forgive those who sin against us, He will not forgive us! That’s kind of scary! If you fear the Lord, you know it’s not good that God won’t forgive you. 

Matthew 6:15 – But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

In 1 John 1:9, we must always confess our sins when we are not kind to others or unforgiving. It cleanses us from unrighteousness. It wipes the slate clean. Yet, remember, we must want to change our behavior. 

1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Bible Verses about Being Kind to Those Who are Mean

It’s tough to respond positively to those who are mean, nasty, offensive and/or rude. They are the ones with the glass always half empty or with an attitude of ‘woe is me’. Yet, we are commanded to love people anyway. You’ve heard the expression,” kill them with kindness.’

Why We Should Be Kind

King Solomon was the wisest man on earth and gave good advice in Proverbs. We find in Proverbs 11:17, if you are merciful to others, it’s good for you too! However, if you’re cruel, it will haunt you. It’s better to choose mercy than to be cruel as you will be troubled as well. 

Proverbs 11:17 – The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

Bible Verse about Treating Someone Badly

I’m not going to suggest it’s easy to be sweet to others, my friend. Most of us have encountered people who are difficult to be kind to. God even addresses in His word that we are to love our enemies. The Bible tells us we are NOT to treat someone badly. 

Instead, Jesus instructs us in Matthew 5:43-48 to love our neighbors as ourselves, even if they are hard to be around or live with.  – Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

How to Know You’re Being Kind

A pastor during our revival at church this week honed in on how to recognize whether you are in the Spirit. He asked, “Are you gentle with your spouse? Kids? Friends?” One of the many Fruit of the spirit is being gentle, kind, and patient. 

If you lack these ‘fruits of the spirit’, you do not have control of your thoughts and mind, the Spirit does not. So, if you are finding yourself not having a controlled mind that’s under the captivity of Christ, you need to take Biblical inventory of your mind! 

How Many Times Is Kindness Mentioned in the Bible

According to answers.com, the word kindness in the KJV version appears 48 times, lovingkindness 26 times, and lovingkindnesses word 4 times. I don’t remember seeing it spelled like that in plural but must have breezed right over it! 

Be Kind Bible Verses

Bible Verse About Kindness and Generosity

It seems as though kindness and generosity go hand and hand in the Bible. If you are being kind, you are being generous with encouragement and peace. 

Luke 6:35 – But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Colossians 3:12 – Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Proverbs 19:17 – He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

• Write a note to say ‘Thinking of You’ to a new friend. 
• Send a note along with your husband to say ‘I love you’
• Tell your kids something you love about them.
• Send a Bible Verse graphic or meme to someone going through a hard time.
• Practice Biblical hospitality and have a friend over for tea and cookies. 
• Buy a small plant with a Good News track or bookmark & leave it with a neighbor.
• Call a sick friend and tell them you’re praying for them.

What are the 7 Spiritual Gifts?

Let’s begin with the question, what are the spiritual gifts and their meanings based on scripture? How do we define it? In 1 Corinthians 12:7, a spiritual gift is a ‘manifestation of the Spirit [of God] given to every man to profit withal”. It’s essentially a gift from God and is not a natural ability. It’s a supernatural ability that God gives to every believer. That statement I just typed gave me goosebumps as it’s so amazing that not only does He give us the gift of salvation, he also presents us with a supernatural ability that is not our natural talent.

Why are Spiritual Gifts Important?

Obviously, spiritual gifts and abilities are important because we should use the gift that God presents us. The Bible gives us a clear example as to why we should seek and use our spiritual talents. For example, the parable of talents Jesus told and recorded in Matthew 25:14–30 answers this critical question.

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus describes a man preparing to go on a journey. He has three servants in which he gave portions of his estate “according to their ability” and leaves. Knowing that they will eventually give an account for their portions, these three men had to decide how to use their “talents” or money. After a long period of time, the Master does return and asks each servant what he did with the gifts he gave them.

The first servant doubled his portion and was told “Well done, good and faithful servant”. The second servant doubled his money as well and was praised by his master and rewarded. The third servant, however, said he was afraid and hid his talent. The master responded with admonishment saying he was wicked and slothful. He took his talent back and gave it to them which had ten talents.

Using Your Talents for the Lord

Do we want to be the two faithful servants who doubled their portion and got praise saying “Well done, thy faithful servant” or do we want to come before our Lord someday with nothing to show in our works? Obviously, this is a rhetorical question as I would assume we as Christians want to show our works to the Lord.

How many Spiritual Gifts are there?

Something I want to mention — he did not pass out talents equally, he gave them “according to their ability”. So, if you see someone who seems to have a lot of spiritual gifts from God, that’s ok. Use your spiritual gift(s) for His glory and be happy with what He has given you.

What if I don’t Use my Spiritual Gifts?

Someday, as born-again believers, we will be kneeling before Jesus and judged at the ‘Bema’ seat. No, we won’t be talking about how we were mean to someone or the many times we sinned, we will be held accountable for our works.

The ‘Bema’ seat of Christ is noted in 2 Corinthians 5:1-19. The purpose of the ‘Bema’ seat is to reveal the character and motivation of the believer. We will be judged by our works or “the things done in his body” (2 Corinthians 5:10), and whether the Lord will accept our works. In 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, “Every man’s work shall be made manifest”. I would plead with you to find out what your spiritual talent is and how He wants you to use it.

What are the Seven Spiritual Gifts in the Bible?

How many spiritual gifts are there? In Romans 12, the 7 Spiritual Gifts in the Bible are clearly spelled out for us. Here is the entire list of spiritual gifts and talents:

1. Gift of Prophecy (Truth Teller) – Declaring the truth to others. Possible Jobs: Missions work or teaching a class
2. Gift of Ministry (Service) – Meeting the needs of others in practical ways. Possible Jobs: Activities/Programs in church, ushers, nursery, etc
3. Gift of Teaching – Clarify and seek truth with a questioning mind and teach it to others. Possible positions could be Sunday School, Bible Clubs, Bible Studies, etc
4. Gift of Exhortation (Encouragement) – Exhort or encourage others to love Jesus better or grow closer to the Lord. Possible responsibilities could be personal counseling, music ministry, visitation, soul-winning etc
5. Gift of Giving – The gift of giving assets to one another and making good decisions coupled with the ability to meet immediate needs.
6. Gift of Ruling – Helping others see the big picture and keep them moving and focused on their spiritual mission. In addition, the gift of leading and coordination of activities that glorify God. Examples may be high-level positions in the church.
7. Gift of Mercy – This gift is being a comforter for those in distress and has feelings of empathy or sympathy for others during trials, tests, and tribulations. Meets needs mentally, emotionally, and practically. Jobs may be hospital visitation, benevolence, and counseling.

What is My Spiritual Gift?

What is your spiritual gift? You might be questioning — what are my gifts and talents? The Bible indicates that we must first be willing to present ourselves a living sacrifice. Let’s compare a physical sacrifice on the altar to a spiritual sacrifice for example. When an animal sacrifice was placed on an altar, it was very slippery. So, two flesh hooks were placed on the animal to hold it to the top of the altar to keep it from falling. In order for you to be a living sacrifice, it takes two character traits as well to keep you from conforming to the world: discipline and devotion. In order to discipline ourselves to have a God-honoring life, we must set up a daily routine of prayer, reading the Bible, and keeping our thoughts focused on Him. This will keep us strong, motivated, and encouraged when the world wants to suck us back in.

How do you keep Biblical thinking from dissipating in your mind? The Bible says in Romans 12:2 that you must have a spiritual transformation by renewing your mind. In other words, be not conformed of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Please do not be afraid of what God has in store for you. Do not be afraid of sharing the gospel with others. Also, get busy in the body, that is, the body of Christ! Use those talents in your church like Sunday School, nursery, leading a Bible Study group, and the list goes on and on.

We all must take care of ourselves spiritually. Spiritual discipline for the Christian life isn’t easy. I get it — having too many distractions and struggles with spiritual motivation is very common. It’s hard to find the energy for spiritual disciplines when we’re so busy with work, family, and other responsibilities. In this post, we’re going to talk about the different ways to practice spiritual disciplines without feeling overwhelmed and under motivated.

What is Spiritual Discipline?

The word “discipline” sounds like something we would want to avoid, right?!! The definition of discipline is “training that corrects or improves.” The definition of spiritual discipline is the intentional act of developing habits and practices that are all designed to encourage Godly characteristics.

What is spirituality? Spiritual practices are the act of disciplining oneself in order to grow spiritually. This includes self-denial and obedience to God’s commands. It is important that we recognize our need for God’s help. In addition, discipline can be used as a weapon against Satan. He wants nothing more than to keep us from achieving the fullness of Christ Jesus.

Why Do We Need Spiritual Disciplines?

While it’s easy to think of punishments as discipline, we should really focus on the word ‘training’. You are training for a spiritual marathon. And remember, discipline is not only for our children, it’s for adults too. Spiritual control is essentially a way for Christians to draw grow closer to God. Let’s discuss many spiritual disciplines recorded in the Bible that you can incorporate into your day. All of our souls need nourishment so we can be a valuable instrument for the body of Christ.

Christianity is a faith that requires discipline to live out. In order to be truly disciplined, one must have the right motivation. The Bible tells us that our motivation should not be self-seeking or prideful. Instead, it’s should be righteous and service-based (1 Cor 10:24). Christians are called to love others with the same love Christ showed us on the cross. When engaging with spiritual disciplines in the Bible, it should always be done with an attitude of humility and grace.

What the Bible Says about Spiritual Discipline

The Bible tells us that God disciplines those he loves (Hebrew 12:6). We are disciplined when we make mistakes and need correction in order to learn from them. One way we’re disciplined is through pain and sorrow. Paul says this kind of suffering produces perseverance which leads to character development and hope (Romans 5:3-4). Jesus also reminds us that his disciples must take up their cross and follow him. When you are going through a trial or temptation, see it as an opportunity for spiritual growth. Instead, think of it as an honor from God. He wants to develop your character traits into the spiritual armor of God.

Having spiritual character attributes will ultimately improve your relationship with God. There are many ways to develop key routines with that focus in mind. Some examples of spiritual practices are praying, reading scripture, or simply spending time in solitude listening for His voice. Our list of spiritual practices is simple yet life-changing and impactful if you follow it routinely. The goal of daily spiritual practices is to develop lifelong habits that feed your spiritual growth. 1. Scripture Reading – It’s critical for Christians to read the Bible daily as a top-key spiritual discipline. I highly recommend having a Bible Reading Plan to keep you focused and hold you accountable. Depending upon your spiritual goals, there are Bible Reading Trackers for one year, 18 months, and even 2 years. Many scripture reading plans are out there to help you stay focused and motivated to keep reading. Make sure to have Bible commentaries available and close to guide you in understanding more difficult scripture.

2. Prayer Time – Devoting spiritual discipline prayer time each day during quiet moments is key to developing a relationship with God. Using the ACTS Method, focusing on praise and gratitude will jump-start your daily prayers.

3. Gratitude – Express gratitude openly and internally every morning as you wake up for current and future blessings. Write daily in your journal noting all of the spiritual blessings you are thankful for.

4. Fasting – Dedicate a day or several hours to not eating and instead, devour the Word and pray incessantly. Then, each time you feel the hunger pains, get into the Word and pray for God’s guidance. Fasting is perfect for times when you need direction on a specific spiritual problem you are facing.

5. Meditation – Find time each day to meditate on certain Bible Verses or passages that help you with weaknesses and struggles. Meditating on scripture passages helps us stay focused on His Word, relaxing our body, soul, and mind.

6. Praising – Giving God glory through music and verbally throughout the day in your thoughts and in your prayers. It’s clear in the Bible that when we are in the Spirit, we should praise God with Psalms and Hymns.

Ephesians 5:18-20 – And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

7. Scripture Memorization – Memorize scripture daily as a way of connecting with God’s word. Knowing scripture fluently combats many issues we face in life. Jesus used the Word of God to defeat Satan during his 40 days of temptation. We should mimic Jesus’ example too. When the kids are acting up, remind them of key Bible Verses. If you are struggling with your tongue, memorize a Bible Verse reminding you of your tongue. Then, when you are tempted to speak evil, it will trigger the right Biblical thoughts.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

8. Bible Journaling– Jotting down prayers, thoughts, and communication from the Lord is an important part of spiritual discipline and wisdom. Write in a spiritual journal all the blessings you’ve received from God. In addition, note your thoughts, prayers, and what He is communicating to you through prayer and His Word. 9. Devotional Reading – Find solid, deep-thinking types of devotionals that motivate and challenge you to act in a Biblical way. I always enjoy Love Worth Finding devotionals from Adrian Rogers. In addition, I am loving the last couple of devotionals I ordered ‘More Than Anything’ and ‘Amen: Eden to Eternity’ from Daily Grace Co!

10. Biblical Thinking – Keep your mind clean and focused on God at all times with positive thinking. Unfortunately, Negative thoughts tend to creep up easily and the Battle of the Mind can be won using Phillipians 4:8,9.

Acts 16:9-15 KJV

The Story of Lydia in the Bible

Here’s what we know about Lydia in the Bible. She sells the color purple and is living during the time period of Christ and Paul has converted to Christianity. He begins his journey to convert souls starting with Europe, in the city of Thyatira. Lydia is not a native to this area and is most likely originally from Asia. 

Paul had a vision, which turned into a mission – starting in Macedonia – and Lydia was the first fruit of that call (Acts 16:9-14)! Lydia was transformed for the Lord right at the beginning of her Christian life, which is truly a sign of a born-again person.

Let’s set the stage. The doors had closed for Paul in Asia Minor, but God revealed a different plan. Paul had a dream where a Macedonian man stood and pleaded with Paul to come over to Macedonia and help them. During this time, Silas and Timothy were part of Paul’s team, and Luke joined them as well as he recorded this secondary journey for Paul. 

Who is Lydia in the Bible? 

Lydia, a seller of purple, was one of the few Jews or proselytes to Judaism in a Gentile community as there was no synagogue in the city. In addition, she was one of the few famous women in the Bible who owned a business or had a prestigious job like Deborah.

Once Lydia gets saved, we find out that she influences her entire household to trust Christ in Act. 16:15. This is a wonderful reminder that YOU have an influence on your family too if they are not saved. Your love and joy for Christ should exude throughout your daily life once you get saved, just like Lydia. 

What Role Did Lydia Play in the Bible?

In addition, Lydia was a great hostess – she had Paul and Silas as frequent guests in their home. The Bible says “she constrained” them, so, in other words, she was a persuasive woman! She obviously had a servant’s spirit and an innate desire to serve the Lord. Did you know that the church at Philippi started in Lydia’s home? 

Think about that next time you read the book of Philippians. We know this because when Paul and Silas were released from jail, they came first to Lydia’s home to comfort their brethren. 

 By the way, Philippi was named after Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great.  Philippi was well known as a prosperous, thriving community at the crossroads of two trade routes. It was called a ‘colony’, meaning it was part of the Roman government. 

Why Did Lydia Sell Purple Cloth?

As mentioned, Lydia sold purple, but what does it mean that Lydia was a seller of purple? It’s not referring to clothes or jewelry as we would think. Instead, the scriptures talk about the expensive purple dye that was made by the Phoenicians and used by royalty and the wealthy. Have you ever heard of the saying “to be born into a wealthy lifestyle” is called “born in the purple”? 

If you remember in Luke 16:19, the rich man of Jesus’ parable was “clothed in purple”. The dye was made from the murex sea snail by a well-guarded process according to the book of Maccabees – which calls it “purple of the sea”. Supposedly, it took 10-12,000 of the creatures to produce one gram of dye. Wow, that’s a lot of sea creatures!

Lydia and the Color Purple in the Bible

The Bible often symbolizes the color purple with authority, wealth, luxury, and, at times, mockery. Its significance varies depending on the context in which it appears in the biblical narrative.

The color purple in Lydia’s story carries several symbolic meanings:

1. Wealth and Prosperity: The fact that Lydia is described as a “seller of purple” indicates that she was involved in the trade of purple textiles or garments. In Biblical times, purple dye was derived from rare and expensive sources, making purple garments a symbol of wealth and luxury. Lydia’s association with purple suggests she was a woman of means and prominence.
2. Royalty and Honor: Purple was often associated with royalty and honor. Looking at Lydia’s life, the connection to purple could symbolize her elevated status and influence in her community. Her prosperous trade might have garnered her respect and admiration among her peers.
3. Spiritual Openness: The Bible suggests that the Lord opened Lydia’s heart, indicating that she was receptive to spiritual matters. This openness to God’s message aligns with the symbolic theme of transformation often attributed to the color purple. Lydia’s journey from a successful merchant to a believer in Christ reflects a profound change and growth.
4. Hospitality and Generosity: Lydia’s invitation to Paul and his companions to stay in her house after her baptism indicates her heart for hospitality and generosity. Purple’s association with luxury ties into this theme, as she was able to provide a place of comfort and care for the missionaries.

In other words, in Lydia’s story, the color purple serves as a symbol of her social status, her journey of faith, and her character traits of prosperity, openness, and hospitality. The richness of the color aligns with the depth and significance of her encounter with Paul and her subsequent commitment to Christianity.

Did Lydia in the Bible Have a Husband?

After she was saved, she influenced her entire household to trust Christ (Ac. 16:15). We don’t know who was part of her household, but she most likely had servants and financial means since she lived in an affluent town. There are no records revealing whether she had a husband; she may have been a widow at this point in her life.

What Does Lydia Mean?

If you’re wondering what Lydia means, the name Lydia means “from Lydia” in Greek. Lydia was a region on the west coast of Asia Minor, supposedly named for legendary king Lydos. The meaning of the name Lydia in Hebrew means a standing pool. 

Why is Lydia Important in the Bible

Lydia’s faith is apparent in her actions. She and her household take the first step of obedience and get baptized (Acts 16:15) by Paul. Yet, she goes even further and becomes a hub for the first church in Phillipi. What an amazing woman! While we don’t know if she is married and could have been widowed, members of her house were saved as well because of her influence in their lives.

Lessons from Lydia in the bible

There are so many lessons we can gain from Lydia’s short passages in the Bible. Here are the takeaways from Lydia’s strong faith in the Lord:

• She has large clout and huge respect from the people in her surrounding environment. 
• Right away she obeys and gets baptized.
• Lydia has a servant’s heart and uses her happy hospitality to host a larger group of men.
• She takes a huge risk keeping them in her house even with Paul & Silas in jail.  
• Many prominent saints in the early churches were women (Lydia, Priscilla, Phebe). 
• Many of the first Christians were women (Ac. 17:4, 12), such as Lydia the first convert of Asia (Ac. 16:14).

Characteristics of Lydia in the Bible

How can we be more like Lydia? Here are some characteristics we can gather from Lydia’s story in the Bible and it’s not about her efforts in purple:

• Be hospitable to the church body. In other words, keep your house clean, available for guests, and well stocked with good food for the body of Christ.
• Have a servant’s heart and serve your fellow Christians when the opportunity arises! 
• Use what the Lord has blessed you with whether it’s your time, talents, or money! 

Lydia was such an important figure in the New Testament church. Can you imagine the impact she had by starting the first church in Asia? Women are critical to the cause of Christ; let’s be diligent in seeking how God can use us in our homes, our church, and in our community.

The Story of Rahab in the Bible

What is the story of Rahab? Rahab was a Canaanite woman who lived in the city of Jericho. This was during the time when the Israelites were preparing to conquer the land of Canaan. When two Israelite spies sent by Joshua were sent to scout the land, they sought refuge in Rahab’s house. She bravely protected them, hiding them from her own city’s authorities. This good decision led her on a path to spiritual victory. Let’s keep going with the story. 

Here’s where Rahab’s life took a huge turn. Rahab demonstrated her faith in the God of Israel by acknowledging His might and choosing to align herself with His people. She hid God’s people in her home and then requested the spies to spare her and her family during the impending destruction of Jericho. The spies agreed and instructed her to tie a scarlet cord in her window, which would be a sign for the Israelite army to protect her household.

When the Israelites attacked Jericho, they followed the Lord’s command, and the city wall collapsed, except for Rahab’s house, which remained standing. As a result of her faith and actions, Rahab and her family were saved, and she became part of Israel’s history. It doesn’t stop her, it only begins. We’ll come to discover that Rahab’s story serves as an example of God’s mercy and the reward of faithfulness, even to those outside of God’s chosen people. 

Who is Rahab in the Bible

This prostitute may have had a dishonorable history, but her future was bright when she made that one key decision, even as a moabite woman. Are you ready to make your life’s key decision? Are you ready to leave your life of misery and suffering? Rahab decided to leave her pagan ideas, job, and culture just like The Story of Ruth, and trusted in God to fulfill her destiny and begin a line of descendants that are truly remarkable. Are you preparing to leave the toxic environment or people you hang out? 

Did you know that Rahab admitted to the Jews that once this Red Sea story broke out, all of her people’s hearts melted and no more courage was found in any man because of their God. She was now after their God’s heart and she became part of God’s plan. How exciting it must have been for her! She begged them to spare her own life and and her entire family from destruction and death.  They agreed to redeem her family and began to slide down a scarlet red cord through the window down the walls of Jericho.

Where is the Great Story of Rahab in the Bible

The story of Rahab takes place in the city of Jericho, part of the Jordan Valley. As mentioned in the Bible, specifically in the Book of Joshua. Here are the relevant verses from the King James Version:

Joshua 2:1 – “And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.”

Joshua 6:1 – “Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.”

The events unfold in Jericho, where the Israelite spies enter the city and seek refuge in Rahab’s house. Later, when the Israelites attack Jericho, Rahab and her family are saved as they had been promised protection for their act of faith and support to the spies.

What Did Rahab Do in the Bible

In the Bible, specifically in the Book of Joshua, Rahab is known for her role in the events surrounding the city of Jericho. Rahab was a woman from Jericho who helped the Nation of Israel’s spies sent by Joshua to gather information about the city before the Israelites’ conquest of Canaan. However, her initial job was at a Harlem, basically, she was a harlot. Despite her past mistakes, God used her in a mighty way. She was redeemed by God and His chosen people by following Him. Rahab then married one of God’s chosen people and became wife of Salmon to start a holy lineage. In the New Testament, it tells us about the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:5-6 (KJV):

“5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias.”

In this genealogy, Rahab is referred to as “Rachab,” and she is mentioned as the mother of Booz (Boaz), who is part of the lineage leading to King David and, ultimately, Jesus. So, based on the KJV and the New Testament genealogy, Rahab is believed to have married Salmon (sometimes spelled “Salma” or “Salmah” greek word), and together they had Boaz, who is a key figure in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

5 Key Decisions Rahab Did to Save Her Reputation

Here’s a summary of what Rahab did in the Bible as the Old Testament records:

1. Assisting the Spies: When the Israelite spies arrived in Jericho, they sought refuge in Rahab’s house. Rahab recognized them as Israelites and hid them from the king of Jericho’s men who were searching for them. She helped the spies escape by lowering them out of a window with a rope, as the city gates were closed and guarded.
2. Faith and Acknowledgment: During her interaction with the spies, Rahab expressed her faith in the God of Israel. She acknowledged the power and might of the God who had brought the Israelites out of Egypt and was leading them to conquer the land. Rahab’s acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty led her to protect the spies and make a pact with them.
3. Covenant with the Spies: In return for her assistance, Rahab asked the spies for protection for herself and her family when the Israelites conquered Jericho. The spies agreed, provided she tied a scarlet cord in her window, which would serve as a marker for the Israelite forces to spare her household during the conquest.
4. Sparing of Rahab’s Family: When the Israelites eventually invaded Jericho, they followed Rahab’s instructions. The city was conquered through a unique military strategy involving the Israelites marching around the city for seven days. Rahab’s family was spared, and they were taken safely outside the city before its destruction.
5. Inclusion in the Family Tree: Rahab’s story does not end there as we discover more about Rahab’s courage. She is listed in the genealogy of Jesus Christ according to the New Testament Gospel of Matthew. She is mentioned as one of the ancestors of Jesus, highlighting the significance of her role in the biblical narrative. Her son was Boaz and husband of Salmon. 

Rahab’s actions demonstrate courage, faith, and a willingness to stand against her own city’s authorities in order to align herself with the purposes of God. Her story is often cited as an example of how God can use individuals from various backgrounds and circumstances to play important roles in His larger plan.

Her Story is About Redemption

Rahab is important on so many levels as a woman. For those who don’t think they are important to God, she dispels that lie many women tell themselves. If you don’t think you deserve to have a happy, fulfilled life in Christ because of your past, it’s not true. If you don’t believe you can make a difference because of past bad decisions, get in line, my friend. We’ve all done things we regret but that doesn’t mean we can’t fulfill our destiny! Let’s start today on being the virtuous woman God wants us to be! 

However, it goes beyond her life. Rahab ended up marrying Salmon, who is the father of the famous Boaz, who ended up marrying Ruth. In Matthew 1:5, it states: “Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David.”

What does Rahab symbolize?

Rahab represents sinners like you and me. Biblical scholars agree that many of the great saints of true faith in Israel were women like Sarah, Miriam, Deborah, Ruth, Hannah, and Anna. It doesn’t matter what sins you’ve committed, as long as you believe in the Savior of the World.

Who Did Rahab Marry

From harlot to heroine, Rahab became a godly wife and mother in Israel. Rahab married Salmon, an Israelite from the tribe of Judah. She became the mother of Boaz. How is Rahab related to King David? God raised up a prostitute to become the great, great-grandmother of King David. Rahab married Salmon, who is recorded as having a son named Boaz in Matthew 1. Boaz and Ruth had a son named Obed who had David’s father, Jesse. 

 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab, and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; And Jesse begat David the king, and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias. Matthew 1:5,6

From the line of Rahab came the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ! Wow, what a heartfelt message about God’s glorious grace through the genealogical introduction to the birth of Jesus!

Characteristics of Rahab

As we have seen the transformation of a harlot unfold, we can also be assured that we can all be restored from the House of Shame to the Hall of Fame!  

Rahab was a pagan destined for spiritual darkness and degradation. Yet, she was delivered from darkness because of her faith in God’s power, she changed the trajectory of her life’s path. 

Rahab was amazingly one of the two women (besides Sarah) mentioned in the Hall of Faith of Hebrews 11. In addition, the Bible tells us she was justified in James 2:25, or made pure in the sight of God.

Here is a list of godly traits Rahab revealed in her story:

• Faithful – By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. Hebrews 11:31
• Believer – She believed in God and his judgment upon her pagan city.
• Obedient – Rahab immediately helped two of God’s men by hiding them and helping them escape.

Eventually, their actions were discovered, and Corrie, along with her sister Betsie, was sent to a concentration camp.

While imprisoned in Ravensbrück, Corrie and her sister Betsy faced extreme hardship, cruelty, and deplorable living conditions. Yet, she displayed incredible patience and longsuffering that seemed unattainable, especially to her fellow prisoners.

One powerful example of her patience can be seen in her interactions with the prison guards and fellow inmates.
