What does the Bible say about Trusting God during Hard Times?

The Holy Bible is clear – we must trust in the Lord with everything, especially during hard times. God does not promise an easy life as Christians. At some point in your earthly existence, you will go through situations that cause pain and/or suffering, whether it’s physical, mental, or spiritual.

Yet, there’s great news for you as the Bible tells us – no worries! God’s grace through Jesus is sufficient for you. That’s it, plain and simple. In your weakness, His strength is made perfect. When I wanted to become a stay-at-home mom, our budget was tight. While I was tempted to believe the world’s culture that ‘you can’t live on one income to pay for expenses’, instead, I trusted in the Lord. When the world told me ‘you must have health insurance’, I decided instead, to have faith in God’s Word and cancel my policy that supported unbiblical procedures. How Do you Trust God in a Difficult Situation?

Are you in a stressful situation and not sure what to do? First, the best action is to pray. Ask for wisdom and trust that He will make the right decision. I suggest recording your prayers in a journal to see how He answers them!

The possibilities could be a door opening or opportunity, a wise friend giving advice, or God granting you patience in waiting. That’s it! The hard part is trusting in the Lord’s timing. While He may reveal His answer right away, many times, He uses this special time to build the fruit of the spirit: patience.

There’s nothing God can’t take care of – just make sure you are applying Biblical principles. In His word, He tells us to trust in Him and you will have perfect peace. Just keep your mind focused on Him (Isaiah 26:3-4, John 14:1).

What Happens When We Trust God while Suffering?

From my own experience and testimony, the power of trusting God works! We must say ‘no’ to doubt and fear and ‘yes’ to trusting in God! If we do have faith in Him, we can expect many blessings through the trials we face. I’m not necessarily talking about material possessions, but spiritual blessings. Always choose the Biblical way as He blesses us with confidence, clarity, and peace.

When we bought our health sharing option with Medi-Share, it was over 12 years ago. Since the inception of our enrollment, our family has had great health and very few issues when the kids were young and even early in high school. The only exception was when my daughter was 12 years old when diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Medi-Share shared the visit after a provider fee, shared the entire cost of lab results, and even prayed with me when I called with questions. How wonderful is that — to be covered with prayers during a crisis in your life!

Trusting God with our Healthcare

My Trusting God story started way back in 2005. When my kids were little, as I mentioned earlier, I quit my lucrative job in Health IT to become a stay-at-home mom with 2 kids under 2 years old. We were advised by everyone close to us not to do it as I was the breadwinner. Our finances would supposedly be too tight with only one income, especially since my husband was ramping up a new construction business.  

However, we know the Bible said that God will provide when we follow our God-given roles as men and women, husbands and wives, and fathers and mothers.  It was simple — we were obeying the Lord.

Trusting God with our Finances

As we progressed on one income, our small budget needed some reductions in monthly costs due to the real estate market volatility my husband had entered. With the rising costs of health insurance, groceries, and education as a new homeschool family, we decided to believe in the Bible instead of looking to others for guidance or the government for help.

Instead, it was time to take a leap of faith and reduce our costs using Biblical principles.

One of the best biblical decisions we made was canceling our health insurance policy. Our past healthcare company supported unbiblical medical procedures that were against our beliefs so instead, we decided to contribute monthly to a health-sharing program called Medi-Share. Since our family was young and healthy, we chose a higher annual household portion (AHP) with a lower monthly cost.

Trusting God with Our Health

For many years, Medi-Share was always there for us. We didn’t need to go to the doctor much during the younger years, but when we did, Medi-Share would help pay for doctor visits and labs.

However, just a couple of years ago, I faced a huge health challenge when the kids were in high school. It was very unexpected and shocking. One morning in September, I discovered a lump in my left breast. I didn’t panic but kept it in the back of my mind as I was feeling pretty well with no symptoms or soreness.

However, after two months I noticed it seemed to be growing. I decided it was time to seek a specialist. I had a quick succession of appointments with my physician assistant, an ultrasound and finally, a mammogram.

It was official, I had breast cancer. How would I cope?

My husband and I decided to trust in the Lord to care for EVERYTHING, and HE DID! After two surgeries and almost two years have gone by, ALL OF MY BILLS HAVE BEEN PAID and I feel better than ever! I changed my diet, and switched from a work-focused routine into a spiritually-focused schedule. This allowed me to transform my mind into Biblical Thinking that changed my relationships into deeper connections with my husband, kids, family, and friends.

I can confidently say my God supplied all my needs! God came through for me and my family and Medi-Share was a vehicle God used to take care of my bills. There is no special secret — the only way is to Trust in the Lord During Difficult Times!

What Happens When We Trust God in the Midst of Suffering?

When we choose to stop relying on our understanding and instead, lean on God, something wonderful happens. Our burdens are lifted. Peace fills our hearts. God works in us. While we don’t always know why bad things happen to us, that’s not for us to know. God’s promises say that He will direct our paths as written in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Remember, my friend, you are not alone in your struggles. Cast all your cares upon him, for He cares for you. God promises to be with you through the toughest of times, the most painful procedures, and the most devastating relationships. His presence is a constant source of comfort and support.

What does the Bible Say about Keeping Faith in Hard times?

When we as humans remove our worries, doubts, and fears and have faith in God, something miraculous happens. The fruits of the spirit are activated. Joy, peace, and love are abounding. God is ever-present in our mind. Those negative thoughts transform into biblical thoughts when we focus on trusting God through Bible verses.

God has a plan for you as shown in Jeremiah 29:11. He will get you through these hard times, just have faith in Him. God encourages you to cast all your burdens on Him because He cares deeply for you (1 Peter 5:7, Psalm 55:22). He will sustain you and never allow you to be shaken.

Trusting God in All Circumstances

As we get into the scriptures my friend, let’s wrap up with positive thoughts knowing that you must trust in God during every single circumstance that comes your way.

For your physical needs, start eating healthy meals that include God’s foods, such as an abundance of organic fruits and vegetables. To strengthen your mental capacity, stop watching and listening to bad shows (including the news) or music that corrupt the mind and instead, saturate yourself with the word of God.

Begin the habit of consistently reading the Bible, listening to sermons, as well as playing Godly music. Your strong mental health will transform your spirit into drawing closer to the Lord. He’ll give you the confidence to make wise decisions daily that will lead you and your family to a brighter future.

What Does the Bible Say about Love Being Kind? 

When my kids were little and squabbling, my go-to verse was usually Ephesians 4:32. When they would fight or cry about a toy or hitting each other, I’d always say ‘Be ye kind to one other…tenderhearted, forgiving one another’.

Yet, honestly, I struggled with it myself. It’s hard to forgive those who don’t ask for it. It was much easier when others asked for forgiveness, but I found most human beings do not say they’re sorry or ‘apologize’.  Instead, they ignore their offenses. I think a lot of times people don’t address this part of the human condition. 

Jesus did say we must continuously forgive those who do offend us. Why is it so hard?

Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Bible Verses about Treating Someone Badly

We do have a choice – we can respond negatively, hold love or a relationship with them, and not forgive. Yet, that’s the worldly way. We are not supposed to be like the world. In Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

So, going back to the choice we have in front of us. We can obey God and forgive people that cause harm, or we can satisfy the flesh and sin against Him. Before we make that decision to let us control ourselves, we can think about this statement – Jesus forgave us too when we didn’t ask for forgiveness. 

God’s Love is Patient and Kind

If we can recognize and fully appreciate God’s love for us, maybe it will help us to be more Christ-like. If our Lord can die for us, why can’t we forgive one another as he does?   

It’s the flesh, my friend. We’re stubborn, bullheaded, and don’t want to cross that line. We convince ourselves that they don’t deserve it. Yet, do we deserve forgiveness from Christ? I know I don’t, yet, He still did anyway.

What Does the Bible Say about Kindness to Others?

So, why is it SO HARD to extend kindness to others as Christ did? Well, we have to be in a certain condition, we can only be kind when we’re in the Spirit. 

In other words, get right with God, be close to Jesus, and you will be kind with gentleness and goodness. 

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 KJV

In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer. Isaiah 54:8

What Happens When We Are Not Kind

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:15 that if we don’t forgive those who sin against us, He will not forgive us! That’s kind of scary! If you fear the Lord, you know it’s not good that God won’t forgive you. 

Matthew 6:15 – But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

In 1 John 1:9, we must always confess our sins when we are not kind to others or unforgiving. It cleanses us from unrighteousness. It wipes the slate clean. Yet, remember, we must want to change our behavior. 

1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Bible Verses about Being Kind to Those Who are Mean

It’s tough to respond positively to those who are mean, nasty, offensive and/or rude. They are the ones with the glass always half empty or with an attitude of ‘woe is me’. Yet, we are commanded to love people anyway. You’ve heard the expression,” kill them with kindness.’

Why We Should Be Kind

King Solomon was the wisest man on earth and gave good advice in Proverbs. We find in Proverbs 11:17, if you are merciful to others, it’s good for you too! However, if you’re cruel, it will haunt you. It’s better to choose mercy than to be cruel as you will be troubled as well. 

Proverbs 11:17 – The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

Bible Verse about Treating Someone Badly

I’m not going to suggest it’s easy to be sweet to others, my friend. Most of us have encountered people who are difficult to be kind to. God even addresses in His word that we are to love our enemies. The Bible tells us we are NOT to treat someone badly. 

Instead, Jesus instructs us in Matthew 5:43-48 to love our neighbors as ourselves, even if they are hard to be around or live with.  – Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

How to Know You’re Being Kind

A pastor during our revival at church this week honed in on how to recognize whether you are in the Spirit. He asked, “Are you gentle with your spouse? Kids? Friends?” One of the many Fruit of the spirit is being gentle, kind, and patient. 

If you lack these ‘fruits of the spirit’, you do not have control of your thoughts and mind, the Spirit does not. So, if you are finding yourself not having a controlled mind that’s under the captivity of Christ, you need to take Biblical inventory of your mind! 

How Many Times Is Kindness Mentioned in the Bible

According to answers.com, the word kindness in the KJV version appears 48 times, lovingkindness 26 times, and lovingkindnesses word 4 times. I don’t remember seeing it spelled like that in plural but must have breezed right over it!

It seems as though kindness and generosity go hand and hand in the Bible. If you are being kind, you are being generous with encouragement and peace. 

Luke 6:35 – But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Colossians 3:12 – Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Proverbs 19:17 – He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

Part of being gentle with your words requires a fruit of the Spirit – patience. If we get frustrated easily, we can lose our Christian testimony pretty quickly. Even when someone is treating us unfairly or unkindly, the Bible tells us we have an opportunity to do good to others.

• Write a note to say ‘Thinking of You’ to a new friend. 
• Send a note along with your husband to say ‘I love you’
• Tell your kids something you love about them.
• Send a Bible Verse graphic or meme to someone going through a hard time.
• Practice Biblical hospitality and have a friend over for tea and cookies. 
• Buy a small plant with a Good News track or bookmark & leave it with a neighbor.
• Call a sick friend and tell them you’re praying for them.

The Story of Rahab in the Bible

What is the story of Rahab? Rahab was a Canaanite woman who lived in the city of Jericho. This was during the time when the Israelites were preparing to conquer the land of Canaan. When two Israelite spies sent by Joshua were sent to scout the land, they sought refuge in Rahab’s house. She bravely protected them, hiding them from her own city’s authorities. This good decision led her on a path to spiritual victory. Let’s keep going with the story. 

Here’s where Rahab’s life took a huge turn. Rahab demonstrated her faith in the God of Israel by acknowledging His might and choosing to align herself with His people. She hid God’s people in her home and then requested the spies to spare her and her family during the impending destruction of Jericho. The spies agreed and instructed her to tie a scarlet cord in her window, which would be a sign for the Israelite army to protect her household.

When the Israelites attacked Jericho, they followed the Lord’s command, and the city wall collapsed, except for Rahab’s house, which remained standing. As a result of her faith and actions, Rahab and her family were saved, and she became part of Israel’s history. It doesn’t stop her, it only begins. We’ll come to discover that Rahab’s story serves as an example of God’s mercy and the reward of faithfulness, even to those outside of God’s chosen people. 

Who is Rahab in the Bible

This prostitute may have had a dishonorable history, but her future was bright when she made that one key decision, even as a moabite woman. Are you ready to make your life’s key decision? Are you ready to leave your life of misery and suffering? Rahab decided to leave her pagan ideas, job, and culture just like The Story of Ruth, and trusted in God to fulfill her destiny and begin a line of descendants that are truly remarkable. Are you preparing to leave the toxic environment or people you hang out? 

Did you know that Rahab admitted to the Jews that once this Red Sea story broke out, all of her people’s hearts melted and no more courage was found in any man because of their God. She was now after their God’s heart and she became part of God’s plan. How exciting it must have been for her! She begged them to spare her own life and and her entire family from destruction and death.  They agreed to redeem her family and began to slide down a scarlet red cord through the window down the walls of Jericho.

Where is the Great Story of Rahab in the Bible

The story of Rahab takes place in the city of Jericho, part of the Jordan Valley. As mentioned in the Bible, specifically in the Book of Joshua. Here are the relevant verses from the King James Version:

Joshua 2:1 – “And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.”

Joshua 6:1 – “Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.”

The events unfold in Jericho, where the Israelite spies enter the city and seek refuge in Rahab’s house. Later, when the Israelites attack Jericho, Rahab and her family are saved as they had been promised protection for their act of faith and support to the spies.

What Did Rahab Do in the Bible

In the Bible, specifically in the Book of Joshua, Rahab is known for her role in the events surrounding the city of Jericho. Rahab was a woman from Jericho who helped the Nation of Israel’s spies sent by Joshua to gather information about the city before the Israelites’ conquest of Canaan. However, her initial job was at a Harlem, basically, she was a harlot. Despite her past mistakes, God used her in a mighty way. She was redeemed by God and His chosen people by following Him. Rahab then married one of God’s chosen people and became wife of Salmon to start a holy lineage. In the New Testament, it tells us about the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:5-6 (KJV):

“5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias.”

In this genealogy, Rahab is referred to as “Rachab,” and she is mentioned as the mother of Booz (Boaz), who is part of the lineage leading to King David and, ultimately, Jesus. Rahab’s family was spared, and they were taken safely outside the city before its destruction.
5. Inclusion in the Family Tree: Rahab’s story does not end there as we discover more about Rahab’s courage. She is listed in the genealogy of Jesus Christ according to the New Testament Gospel of Matthew. However, it goes beyond her life. Rahab ended up marrying Salmon, who is the father of the famous Boaz, who ended up marrying Ruth. In Matthew 1:5, it states: “Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David.”

Rahab was amazingly one of the two women (besides Sarah) mentioned in the Hall of Faith of Hebrews 11. In addition, the Bible tells us she was justified in James 2:25, or made pure in the sight of God.

We serve ourselves, feed our selfish desires, and lack the discipline to nurture our relationship with Christ as we should in earthly marriage.

Here are some signs that you are cheating on God in your spiritual life on a daily basis:

1. You fail to read your Bible for encouragement, reflection, and conviction.
2. You read your Bible but don’t put it into practice. It’s become just a routine and not a life-altering spiritual guide.
3. Your prayer life is hit or miss. You tend to only pray when you’re struggling or someone asks you to pray for them.
4. Faithful church attendance and ministering to others are not priorities in your life. You don’t see the importance of being in the body of Christ and your attitude and involvement reflect this weak position.

1. Ruth – Ruth, a Moabite woman from a pagan culture, became the great-grandmother of King David. She was faithful to God by being loyal to her mother-in-law Naomi. Because of her faithfulness and willingness to follow God’s plan for her life, she was rewarded in her earthly and spiritual life with the lineage to Jesus Christ.
2. Esther – Esther was a Jewish queen in Persia who fasted, asked her people to fast, and risked her life to save her people from genocide. She showed a huge amount of great courage, suffering, and faith in God throughout the entire process of saving her people through God’s plan.
3. Mary, the mother of Jesus – Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus and remained faithful to her earthly son and Lord throughout her entire journey in life.
4. Hannah – Hannah was a woman who struggled with infertility but remained faithful to God and prayed for a child. When God answered her prayer and gave her a son (Samuel), she dedicated him to God’s service.
5. Sarah – Sarah was the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac who bore Israel. Even though she lacked faith in God in the early stages of her life, she eventually became faithful to God by following her husband’s lead when calling him ‘Master’. She decided to trust in God’s promise and He give her a son even at the ripe old age of 99.

1. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. – 1 Corinthians 4:2

The Apostle points out that it’s essential for a steward to be considered faithful to his master. We are ministers in place of Christ until He comes back.

Are you faithful as a follower of Christ? Do you minister unto others at your local church body? Think about the role God gave you. If you are a woman and wife, minister unto your husband and kids and your friends, family, and those younger than you. If you are a single woman, minister to those you connect with each and every day.

Be faithful in serving the Lord using the gifts God has given you.

2. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21

Wouldn’t you just love to hear those 7 words when you get to Heaven?!! This is part of the Parable of the Talents and the need for personal preparation and faithful service to the master.

3. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Matthew 24:45

This is part of the Parable of Two Servants in Matthew 24:43-51. In summary, the faithful and wise servant will be given more responsibilities in the Lord’s kingdom.

4. A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. – Proverbs 28:20

Faithfulness results in many blessings. Not just one, but multiple blessings. Yet, those who want to get rich will be guilty of transgressions.

5. The just shall live by faith. – Galatians 3:11

This is also a quote from Habakkuk 2:4 stating that not only is one justified by faith, but he is thereafter to live by faith.

6. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. – 2 Chronicles 16:9

The Lord watches and waits for any opportunity to help those who trust and follow Him.

7. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. – Galatians 6:9

We must stop getting discouraged and tired of doing good or in other words, sowing to the spirit. If we get discouraged, we will slow down and lack the motivation to keep moving forward with faithfulness and good work. If we do not relax or let down our focus, we will reap huge benefits from the harvest.

8. Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. – 1 Corinthians 16:13

Don’t be afraid to speak your convictions — stay strong, solid, and settled. Faith, conviction, and courage are the essential characteristics of spiritual success and victory.

9. He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. – Luke 16:10

A faithful man or woman is righteous before God. If a man or woman is faithful in little things, he will be faithful in important matters. He that is unjust in the small things, is unjust also in a lot. Another example is someone who is dishonest, unfaithful, or unrighteous in little things and will do the same in major things. Let’s take money as another example – those who are unfaithful in monetary matters will be in other areas.

10. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23

As you can see, faith is part of the 9 fruit of the spirits that will reflect in your life if you love the Lord your God with all your heart. Faith is included in the spiritual fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, and temperance.

11. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord. – Romans 12:9-11

Love one another without hypocrisy or being fake. Hate anything evil. Stick to what is good. Be kind to another in brotherly love (family affection or church family love), allow others to be first and don’t seek self-promotion, do not procrastinate in your business, and finally, allow the spirit to stirred overwhelmingly as we serve the Lord.

12. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. – 1 Timothy 6:11

Paul is talking to greedy business owners and sinful employees. As Christian women and followers of Christ, we should always be seeking after righteousness. What is Pride?

What’s the definition of Pride from a Biblical perspective? In a nutshell, pride is independence from God. Do you think you have issues with this — maybe you don’t have a strong prayer life and forget to pray. Or, maybe you don’t read your Bible like you should — it’s been days or maybe even weeks. If this is the case, you could be convincing yourself that you don’t need God’s Word. Independence from God.

Pride is also esteeming yourself better than others, whether you think you’re better because you have more money, material possessions, talents, etc. You’re forgetting that God gave you all of those possessions, internally and physically.

How Do I Know I’m Prideful?

Adrian Rogers provides 5 great examples of pride which I think are helpful for those of us, like me, who are not sure when we are pride-filled:

1. Prideful people will become irritated when someone corrects their mistakes or instructs them.
2. A proud person will accept praise over what they don’t have control over such as beauty, abilities, and talents as gifts from God.
3. A pride-filled person will not admit mistakes and always has an excuse for why something happened, and it’s not them.
4. Prideful people refuse to take counsel and learn from other people.
5. A proud person compares themselves to others as being better, having more, etc.

We all have pride and it’s an insidious sin that affects Christians. James quotes Proverbs 3:34 here referring to the earlier context about loving the world. God notices and wants us to love Him, not the world. His promise is — if you submit to God’s divine wisdom, He will give you grace. However, if you elevate yourself, you will face a formidable foe. In other words, seek God’s wisdom and stop being proud — instead, focus on being humble.

2. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Philippians 2:3

Christians, whether in the secular world or in the church, must always seek the approval of God, not the approval of men. Strife is translated in Greek (eriyeia eritheia) as the sense of self-seeking pursuit of political office by an unfair means. It also means selfishness and self-promotion. Some in the Philippian church were caught up in pride and advancing themselves for an office in the church.

Are you seeking a position in your church for vainglory? If you’re not sure, look at your motives. Is it to gain power and control over others, or do you fantasize about getting up in front of people to grab popularity? If so, be humble. Seek God’s will and wisdom. Envision how you can glorify God in your position.

3. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering. Colossians 3:12

Like a spiritual wardrobe or the armor of God, this command must be obeyed at once. This is now your spiritual wardrobe of practical righteousness:

• Bowels of mercies – have a heart of compassion,mercy in action, and heartfelt sympathy for the less fortunate.
• Kindness is a sweet disposition, gentleness, and graciousness.
• Humbleness of mind is the outward expression of this right internal attitude.
• Meekness – Does NOT mean WEAKNESS! It’s the lowliness and delicate consideration for others. Pride has no place in the Christian’s life and we tend to give proud looks, which means our heart holds pride.
• Longsuffering – Patience under provocation (someone who provokes you to anger or is annoying). Someone who bears injury and insult without retaliating.

4. When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. Proverbs 11:2

Pride, which is basically a concern for self-advancement and is void of concern for others, is the dynamic behind a breach of ethics. It’s an abomination to the Lord as declared in Proverbs 6:16-17 “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,”.

5. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.1 Peter 5:5

Here we are talking again about being clothed in humility. The younger men and the older men play a part in the church and the social structure shouldn’t be disrupted. The elders are the leaders and younger men must submit to them. The word ‘be clothed’ (engkomboomai) means literally to ‘tie on’ an apron; here humbleness should be put on to those in the church as everyone has a proper role in their relationship with others.

6. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matthew 23:12

God, in His perfect time, will exalt those who are humble. Spiritual greatness is not measured in rank, popularity, or fame. The scribes and Pharisees were not clothed in humility but in robes of self-righteousness. As Christians mature, we may have a tendency to get prideful and arrogant and what we know about the Bible. We must always be careful to keep our humbleness and check out our pridefulness. Sadly, the world sees a servant’s heart as weakness and low social standing. However, to God, it is a mark of spiritual maturity.

In due season, He will magnify and give grace to the meek and humble servant. Are you looking for ways to serve others?

7. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. Psalm 25:9

God will go out of His way to teach the meek. This Old Testament sense refers to lowliness or humility, not weakness. God promises those with humble minds will make the right decisions or judgments. It’s exciting to hear that He will teach the humble the secrets of His ways!

 8. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life. Proverbs 22:4

Here’s another promise from God. He will reward you for humbleness. If we have a teachable and disciplined spirit and remain humble with fear, we will obtain riches, honor, and a blessed life.

9. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Isaiah 57:15

Revival comes from the individual. It comes from those who have a humble attitude and are broken before God. You can organize a revival in a church building but it’s the people who set their idols before the Lord and find a renewed dependence on the Lord Jesus. Next time there is a revival organized at church, remember that it’s the people who need revival in their hearts.

10. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8

The prophet Micah answers questions from the people and reminds them that God does not require just an outward appearance of conformity. He wants an internal obedience to God. Moses, through the ten commandments, reveals the external actions. Yet, the external evidence shoed the true intention of one’s heart relationship with God.

There are three dimensions to God’s requirements, as the KJV Parallel Bible shares:

1. Outward – to do justly in an external fashion to each other.
2. Inward – to love mercy means you’ve committed to God’ revelation that will manifest itself in a right relationship towards man and God.
3. Upward – to walk humbly with God having the right attitude towards Him and a determination to walk in continuous fellowship with God.
   

God doesn’t desire us to ‘fake it ’til we make it’. Instead, we need to ask God for spiritual revival internally and restore our relationship with the Lord so we bear fruit naturally and not forced. We should have self-control inside so we don’t have to fake it outside.

11. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Luke 14:11

We must be seen as small in our own perspective before we are huge in His eyes. Across the globe, most cultures designate places for the honored guest(s) at meals and other functions. Jesus warned us about placing ourselves at the ‘head table’ unless we are invited to do so. We want the best for ourselves, don’t we? If we choose the best seat for ourselves, we will be dishonored. Wait for your time, my Christian friend. It will come.

12. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:10

The man or woman who submits themselves to the Lord in a spiritual sense will be exalted in ways he or she could never achieve as Matthew 23:12 and I Peter 5:6 mentions as well.

Humbleness is crucial to be in fellowship with God and with our friends, family, and acquaintances. The second fruit of the Spirit is joy. The strong relationship we have with the Lord will naturally exude joy. Christ promises in the Gospel of John that we will see fruit, answered prayer, love, and joy as a result of abiding in Him.

What Does Jesus Say about Joy?

In the Gospel of John, as we talked about a good scripture verse on joy, let’s dissect what that means since Jesus did say it. Jesus essentially tells his disciples that he wants them to experience the fullness of joy in our earthly life.

In other parts of the Bible, Jesus spoke about the connection between obedience and joy. If we truly love Jesus and seek His guidance, we will naturally want to follow and obey Him. For example, in John 14:15, he said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

This also ties in with the good Bible Verse for Joy we just mentioned. In John 15:10-11, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. Proverbs are well known for wise and quip sayings. Solomon was the wisest of all time, and what he says will make a difference in our lives. Here is Proverbs 17:22 it says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

In other words, when a man or woman is upset or gloomy, he or she causes their entire body to become lifeless and useless like a huge pile of old, dried-up bones. Yet, when joy overwhelms the heart of a human being, it refreshing to the entire body, soul, and spirit. Plus, it’s contagious and spreads quickly throughout any connections you encounter throughout the day.

What Do Proverbs Say about Joy?

1. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.  – Isaiah 35:10

Believers will come to the promised Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, and there will be joy and no sorrow or sadness. This is a beautiful image of how the saved people of God will live in true peace, joy, and harmony in the blessed millennial kingdom as the Messiah finally rules.

Isn’t this a wonderful promise! We will live with Jesus in peace, joy, and harmony when Jesus returns after He gathers His followers during the rapture.

 2. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.  – Psalm 16:11

Jesus is the first to overcome death and has trodden down the path of life. His promise to us is because He lives, we, as believers or followers in Christ, will live forever and always be present with Him, filled with joy.

Don’t let life get you down, my friend. Find ways to obtain that joy by living for Him, trusting in His promises, and not fearing man.

 3. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.  – John 15:11

A very popular joy Bible Verse, as everyone wants to be happy in this lifetime. This is another fruit of the spirit that we can attain if we trust in Him and in His Word. If we do remain faithful, our joy tank will always be full despite any of our gloomy circumstances.

 4. Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.  – Isaiah 51:11

Just as God delivered His people out of Egypt, He will redeem believers in any nation that has been dispersed. They will gather again in the Holy Land. Everlasting joy (simecath) means to rejoice with one’s heart and soul. There is no reason for His people to be afraid of any man. We should only fear the Lord. He will take action and we will reap the benefits of joy.

 5. Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.  – Philippians 4:4

This is a wonderful verse when stress, impatience, anger, or any negative emotion hovers over you. If you rejoice when this happens, joy will follow.

 6. For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.  – Romans 14:17

The kingdom of God is all about righteousness, not eating meat. What is righteousness? The definition is perfect uprightness in our daily walk. Peace is the perfect attribute with God and the consistent attempt to be a peacemaker of the brethren. Joy is defined as the perfect union and deep love through the Holy Spirit.

We may have the liberty to pursue our own interests, yet, if we lead by example for a weaker one, we are pleasing the Lord. If your sister is stumbling on something, refrain from it. For example, getting a tattoo, multiple ear piercings, and wearing trendy clothing, might be a stumbling block for new Christians. Ask God to help you not be a stumbling block for other Christians struggling in certain areas.

 7. A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.  – Proverbs 15:13

If you have joy in your heart, it brightens your countenance. The inner condition of a woman is revealed in her outward appearance. If we have sadness or feel solemn, the spirit of a woman is torn or broken. We are not effective in our spiritual walk with the Lord and in our daily living habits. If we can change our hearts to be joyful, our daily course of action reveals the presence of the Holy Spirit.

What are your daily habits? Do you take time to Read the Word, Pray, Praise, and Commune with God? If so, your spirit will be in tune with the Lord, and you too will have a merry heart.

 8. For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.  – Psalm 30:5

Crying is common for the restless heart, yet, when we lay our burdens at the feet of Jesus, joy comes in the morning to relieve us, even the heaviest of hearts. Are you struggling with a huge burden? If so, pray to the Lord, knowing that He will take care of it in His season of time.

 9. And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.  – Acts 13:52

Despite rejection and persecution during the Acts of the Apostles, they were encouraged, not discouraged, by the Holy Ghost. Many times we feel dejected when we witness to someone what Jesus has done in our lives. Yet, if we are filled with the Spirit, we will keep moving forward joyfully.

 10. And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation.  – Psalm 35:9

In David’s words, he is thankful for God rescuing him and now wants to honor the Lord. His entire anatomy is filled with gratitude and gratefulness.

Has God done something for you that amazing your entire being? I know He has for me — I marvel at His grace and mercy. Praise Him now for what He’s done for you!

 11. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.  – Isaiah 55:12

The preceding verses (Isaiah 55:8-11) remind us that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways. We cannot comprehend His knowledge. The Word of God accomplishes His purposes, not ours. Those who believe and receive HIs message shall experience great joy and peace. You will become a fruitful tree, not a thorn or brier. Be a fruit-filled tree, women! You will experience awesome feelings of joy and peace through Jesus Christ.

 12. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.  – Romans 15:13

Do you feel hopeless at times? If so, you must put on the entire armor of God each morning as you trust in His promises, His Word. During Jesus’ time on earth, He told His disciples to enter into His peace, not the world’s peace. Jesus’ peace calms people’s fears and troubled hearts. It’s positive, calming, and in control.

3. “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” – Psalm 119:165

David is referring to peace (Hebrew ‘shalom’) which is an overwhelming sense of completion and wellness.

4. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” – Isaiah 26:3

In Hebrew, this literally reads “peace, peace” where you read ‘perfect peace’. This double emphasis indicates a peace we cannot understand or comprehend. Those who totally trust in the Lord will have this double-minded peace. Are you completely secured and sustained by His amazing promises and the power of a Holy God?

5. “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

This is a reminder to Jesus’ followers that He has overcome the world, why should we fear or tremble? Be happy, have joy, your Lord is in control!

6. “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.” – Isaiah 32:17

The moral and spiritual character of the Millennium is noted here. On that day, the righteousness of man will generate peace for everyone. We have the assurance or security of a relationship with God, forever!

7. “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” – 1 Corinthians 14:33

Service to the Lord will not be disorderly or confusing, it will be done decently and in order, for God is the author of Peace!

8. “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” – Colossians 3:15
Instead of fear ruling in your heart, let the peace of God run your life. Do not allow adversity or circumstances allow to cloud your heart with negative emotions. ‘Rule’ is to make a final decision and settle all questions. Our ‘heart’ refers to any thoughts, feelings, and desires.

9. “Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.” – Psalm 37:37

The Psalmist reminds us that we are wise to give our attention to a man who lives upright and perfectly. In turn, man has peace, a fruit of the spirit.

10. “Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” – Ephesians 1:2

Grace is given to us in an unmerited method from God, and peace is a result of reconciliation in our restored relationship with Him. It removes all strife and blesses us with peace and tranquility.

11. “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” – Psalm 34:14
It is clear in this Psalm scripture that we must leave evil immediately or avoid it entirely. Think of evil as a plague. If you know it’s there, you avoid it. Once we do depart from evil, we seek peace. It will not find us, we must intentionally go after peace.

12. “Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:16
Paul reminds us in his letter to the Thessalonians that in the end, it’s not our effort, but the Lord’s doing that can accomplish the wonderful gift of salvation and peace.

Otherwise, the ‘flesh’ as Paul calls it will take over and your reactions will become fruits of the flesh – impatient, angry, and prideful.

1. James 5:7-8 “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.”
   
   Just like a husbandman, which is a farmer or cultivator of land, this example is used to describe someone who tends and cares for something as if it were a farm or garden, whereas, in James 5:7, we are to act like someone who cultivates and nurtures our spiritual life. The harvest is an illustration of the kind of patience and endurance that believers should exhibit as they await the coming of the Lord.

2. Proverbs 15:18 “A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.”
   
   An angry man can let his emotions get the best of him and start causing strife or arguments and disagreements within close friends or acquaintances. If you are someone like this or know someone who is, using the Bible verse Proverbs 15:1-   A soft answer turneth away wrath: But grievous words stir up anger.
   

3. Colossians 1:11 “Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.”

Only through His power can you strengthen your will and courage. And, only through Him can you endure times during a long trial by learning patience while having joy. 

4. Ecclesiastes 7:8 “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

The conclusion of a difficult time or experience is usually better than the beginning. Humans mature as they marinate during a tribulation. It’s better to be patient in the spirit than proud as it brings much fruit. 

5. 1 Corinthians 13:4 “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.”

While this Bible verse is typically associated with marriage and relationships, it’s clearly about the love of the church, In other words, this refers to agape love, or sacrificial love, not feeling-based or emotional like in the movies.  

6. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 “And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.”
   
   The word ‘patient’ in this context is translated as ‘patient waiting’ or ‘upomonh hupomone in Greek. While this is a common word for patience, it exudes a sense of perseverance.
   
   Paul is talking to the church, urging them to focus their efforts toward a greater love for God and persevering in the face of any and all persecution.
   
   Are you facing persecution? Do you struggle with rejection from your peers or family because of your faith in Christ? 
   

7. Hebrews 6:12 “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

There is no effort in being slothful, sloppy, and spiritually careless. Yet, as followers (mimhthv mimetes), meaning those who mimic or imitate, we ought to follow the best example of godly people who in sincere ‘faith and patience’ have received all of God’s promises.

Abraham is an excellent example of patiently waiting for his special promise.  

8. Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

God promises us as believers that IF we wait, He will restore our strength. The word ‘wait’ is translated in Greek (hwq kaw-vaw’) to mean ‘trust the Lord and then wait for Him to respond.’ In other words, rest and rely on the Lord. The prophet notes that those who do wait will rise up as wings of eagles.

They will be able to run, not be weary, but to walk, and not faint. Trust, rely, and don’t verify but wait for Him. This means not only our spiritual strength, but also emotional, mental, and even physical strength. 

9. Psalm 37:7 “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.”
   

Do you find yourself frustrated with evil doers on this earth? You’re not alone, yet, the Bible tells us here to ‘rest’ (Mmd dawman’) or be silent. Hold your peace and wait on the Lord rather than getting angry and annoyed at the appearance of the wicked prospering.

Be calm as they’ll be eventually cut off like an obnoxious weed. You, however, as a follower of Christ, will inherit the earth! What a wonderful promise!

10. Lamentations 3:26 “It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.”

Jeremiah experienced great grief as other prophets and reminded the reader that it’s good for us to have hope and wait for God to save us from whatever ails us whether it’s sickness, trauma, trial, or temptation. 

11. Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is not law.’ 

Patience is one cluster of the fruit of the spirit as indicated in the famous passage for all 9 Fruits of the Spirit. It will grow naturally to us if we trust in the Lord. When we walk in the Spirit, we don’t walk in the flesh but we will naturally exude patience and the other fruits of the spirit. 

12. Ecclesiastes 7:9 “Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.”

Solomon, who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, talks about how he remembers some of the genuine wisdom from the days he walked with God. See Proverbs 14:17 and 16:32 for more details.
